![]() The promontory was inhabitated first by the Etruscans (see the Museo della città di Cosa, Ansedonia), and there is evidence that after the Punic Wars, a Roman family known as the gens Domitia controlled part of the area. Later, the Spaniards fortified the two harbors in the 16th century, and built a considerable number of structures to control the Tyrrhenian Sea. These fortifications -- above all Forte Filippo (named after Philip II of Spain) and Forte Stella -- remain in good condition today, and are a popular spot for tourists. |
